The autonomous driving consortium that includes BMW, Intel, FCA, and others has added Canadian auto supplier Magna International to its ranks. The companies involved will collaborate to develop a self-driving vehicle platform for use by all automakers.
The alliance began with BMW, Intel, and Israeli self-driving tech company Mobileye, then grew to include suppliers Delphi (now known as Aptiv) and Continental, and most recently Fiat Chrysler. Magna is the largest auto supplier in North America and brings its expertise in sensors and systems integration to the table.
“Many of the autonomy challenges the industry is facing can’t be handled in isolation,” said Magna’s chief technology officer Swamy Kotagiri, in a release. “I am confident that the many strengths brought forward by each partner will contribute to the delivery of a self-driving platform the market can leverage. We are extremely excited to be one of the early integrators bringing our unique capabilities to the platform.”
Speaking of the role Magna will play in the alliance, BMW AG management board member Klaus Fröhlich said, “Magna has a long-term experience in integrating complex systems seamlessly onto individual vehicle platforms, while securing differentiation for individual OEM customers.”
The consortium is targeting 2021 for the launch of its flexible vehicle platform. The platform is being developed with different levels of autonomy in mind, including Level 4 and Level 5, the highest degrees of self-driving tech. BMW’s iNEXT autonomous vehicle is also set for a 2021 launch, so it’s probably a safe bet it will ride on this jointly developed platform.
