Crossover coupes make little sense. But judging from the fact there are several of them on the market, customers are obviously at least somewhat interested in these automotive oxymorons. One such example is the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE S Coupe, which is coming to dealerships in late 2020. Prices start at $117,050, making it a few thousand dollars more expensive than the regular, boxier GLE 63 S SUV.
The crossover coupe is not cheap, but it’s a nice middle ground between competitors from BMW and Porsche. The BMW X6 M50i, which delivers 523 horsepower, starts at $86,645. On the other end of the price spectrum sits the 541-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe, which goes for $133,250. The Mercedes is more powerful than both raked-butt vehicles, making 603 horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. Power is routed to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox. According to Mercedes, it takes 3.7 seconds for the vehicle to reach 60 mph, and you can go as fast as 174 mph.
Inside the cabin, the GLE 63 S Coupe offers the abundant luxuries you’d expect. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen of the same size. There’s also a standard Burmester surround sound system, wireless charging, 64-color ambient lighting, navigation, and heated and ventilated front seats. On the safety front, the model comes with a host of features including active lane keep assist, blind spot assist, active parking assist, and active LED headlamps.
