A couple of rumors have popped up for the 2006 season.

The first one is pretty interesting. Top Truck team Ultra Motorsports could be seeing some kind of leadership change or downsizing. Team owner Jim Smith has been apparently been too stressed trying to manage the two Truck operation and could be looking to sell his share in the team or reduce to a one car operation. The team has one once this season, with Ted Musgrave in the 1 looking like a dark horse for the title. Their second truck, the #2 Ram piloted by AJ Foyt IV, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, and Erin Crocker, has come close to winning this year but the #2 Truck hasn’t found victory lane since 2003. What the future holds for this team is unknown.

Apparently, “The King” Richard Petty has been mulling a return to the Truck series. The team hasn’t fielded a Truck since 2002, but the rumors are pretty interwoven with the Ultra Motorsports rumors mentioned above. Petty could buy a share in Ultra Motorsports or simply buy out the team altogether; although it is unclear if Petty has the funds to do that. Apparently, The King has had his eye on a few drivers: Justin Allagaier, a young hotshot making his rookie year in the 65 Truck this season, Roush Racing developmental driver Bobby East, RCR development driver Brandon Miller, and an outsider to NASCAR - V8 supercar expert Marcos Ambrose. Seeing a 43 truck back on the circuit would be an interesting development for sure.

A driver that has seen a lot of attention in the garage has been Brandon Whitt. The 23 year old has yet to win the Truck series, but is the best driver of the field not to do so. His consistency in bringing the mid pack Red Horse Racing #38 Truck to a top 10 points finish in 2004 has not gone unnoticed as he sits 4th in points right now with just one DNF in 2005. He has some big names rumored to be interested in him, like Chance 2 Motorsports, Evernham Motorsports, and Braun Racing. If Whitt can break through and get his first career win, it would likely secure enough interest to get some kind of funding and hopefully a ride in the Busch series for 2006. Keep an eye on Brandon Whitt.

After a disagreement between Jeremy Mayfield and Ray Evernham went public a few weeks ago, a source behind the scenes said the two have worked it out and to expect Mayfield to return in 2006.

Ricky Rudd has considering retirement, according to a source in the garage. The 49 year old scored a feel good win at Kansas last season but hasn’t been a contender to win since arguably 2001. It also seems like the Wood Brothers want family in the car with Jon Wood on the rise. Wood sits 12th in GNS points in the 88 Robert Yates Ford, while Rudd hasn’t done much this season besides keeping the car in the top 30 in owners points, sitting 27th in both points systems.
