I buy too many yoyos. I also try a lot of yoyos, some of these are older that I just picked up this year. I'm blatantly ripping off formatting from u/buddyravage but going to categorize them in a different way. Note these are the throws that stood out, for better or worse.

Cream of the Crop:

These are the best yoyos I've thrown this year, either because they perform amazing or stand out in some way (such as being amazing for the pricepoint or having a very interesting design).

SF PLSTC ($20): 10/10. This yoyo is a must have, sure it's heavy, sure it's polycarbonate, but the finish on it is the best of any poly yoyo I've ever seen. Great yoyo to chuck in your backpack, I've hit mine on concrete a few times and it's still surprisingly playable and smooth on the bearing.

C3yoyodesign Cyber Crash ($30): 9/10. This is probably my favorite budget monometal currently. The price is great, the design is great, and you get C3's awesome colorways. Plays all around great, no complaints.

MagicYoyo Z01-Focus ($40): 8/10. When it comes to price vs. performance, I think this is your grab. Magicyoyo knocked it out of the park with this bimetal release, especially given the pricepoint. The only downsides for me is the engraving prevents you from fingerspinning it, and I would not be surprised if the rings come loose if you throw it into concrete.

SF Cadence ES ($50): 9/10. See below.

UNPRLD Recognition ($45): 9/10. You want a $45-50 yoyo that's made to slay tricks? Pick this or the SF Cadence ES. The cadence plays faster, better for speed combos and those kieran-esque speedy tech combos. The recognition plays heavier and slower, but if you do dense tech combos or whip tricks, you'll love it. Can't go wrong with either of them.

MK1 Diffraction 2 ($70): 9/10. You like supporting the little guy? Pick Mark from MK1. This yoyo slays, the design is great, it moves fast while retaining stability, it's got a thumb grind lip, you can finger spin it, you could probably take it out to dinner too.

One Drop Virtuoso ($80): 9/10. Not putting an OD yoyo in this section is criminal. I think the Virtuoso is their best release this year, even if it doesn't have side effects. It's comfy, the shape and design is simple, and it just feels clean to throw. If you're looking for a side effect yoyo, the Legendary Terrarian is the runner up here.

C3yoyodesign Radius 7068 ($80): 9/10. This is the best performing monometal dropped this year, it's a powerful throw, made of 7068 (as implied by the name). While the yoyo won't make you Shion Araya, it will make you happy. Just note that it's not going to move as fast as Shion makes it move, so if you're looking to hit rail combos for days maybe pick up a bimetal.

Anomaly Yoyos Euphonious ($60-80): 10/10. You've probably never heard of this yoyo, it's a pocket sized stainless steel yoyo with a D bearing. 63.5 grams. It's got more RPMs than your favorite supercar, and is the most interesting yoyo I've thrown this year. And yes, it's better than the clique. Too bad it's very hard to buy ¯\(ツ)

Yoyofriends hummingbird ($120): 8/10. This is the best outer ring bimetal of the year, so if you want a fresh competition yoyo, grab this, or spend even more on a yoyorecreation throw.

The "Not for everyone" Tier:

These are the yoyos you buy if they look interesting to you, but might not be everyone's new favorite throw. You could call this the honorable mention list.

YoyoFactory Edge Ultimatum ($50): 7/10. I really liked this yoyo, there's just one hurdle. It's ****ing huge. You thought the manatee was wide? Think again. This thing's got more beef than my pet cat. But, it's sooo fun. The size is a bit misleading, as it's only 63.7g, and the pricepoint makes it semi-easy to justify trying out. If you have small hands I would avoid this one.

Zipline Strings Honey Badger ($65): 7.5/10. First off, this yoyo is smooooth. You can tell some serious care was had when assembling and testing these. The design is clean, the feel is great, I would describe it as buttered toast, but most importantly the yoyo is laid back and relaxed. I wouldn't pick this up to compete with, but if you want a yoyo to jam with, can't hurt to have this.

Duncan Tourney ($75): 7.5/10. This one also grew on me. If you like Duncan's finish on their yoyos, you'll like this one. The design is clean, but everyone I've gave it to throw was instantly surprised by just how all around good this throw is. It plays fast and kinda light though, do be warned.

OhYesYo x iLinx Toys Freq. Mod ($90): 7/10. When I first threw this yoyo, I didn't really like it. I threw it on my shelf, and it collected dust. But I kept picking it up every once in a while, throwing it again and again. Then I realized I really really enjoyed it. Call it stockholm syndrome, but this yoyo is fun, and insanely comfortable in the hand and on the string. However, the yoyo really shines when you throw one of markmont's formulas on it, a match made in heaven.

UNPRLD Disruption ($100): 7.5/10. If you've thrown an UNPRLD corruption, you know what this yoyo is about. Imagine a corruption with bimetal rims. Same magic, longer spins. What's not to love? It plays a bit light, but I think it's an interesting throw, and if you liked the corruption, a no brainer.

Ti-Vayder ($140): 7/10. You want titanium? You want to preserve some sanity of the wallet? Grab this. Just note it's definitely an EDC yoyo, you won't compete with it, and you probably won't be busting out crazy speed combos. But, it does feel oh so good.

The Yikes Tier:

These are the yoyos that border into the bad investment territory. Anything that isn't in this tier or the above tier is probably a good yoyo, but didn't stand out as being AMAZING. This tier is reserved for the bad or ugly. Note that these are to my personal taste, so just because it's listed here doesn't mean you won't like it, it just means I don't.

YYF Glow Arrow ($25): 2/10. The arrow lineup has never been very impressive (other than the arrow elite), but this one is especially jank. Don't buy this yoyo. The gimmick value is there, sure, but glow in the dark plastic has a very awful feel to it, and I haven't seen one that didn't have vibe. If you want a blacklight yoyo, there's other options that are better.

Magicyoyo Aurora (~$30): 2/10. I REALLY, REALLY wanted this to be good. A light up yoyo sounded very cool, but this is just a bad attempt. The lights on mine regularly flicker/die randomly while the yoyo is spinning, even after changing the battery. The playing experience also is not very good, as the yoyo has little rim weight and doesn't spin very long.

YYF Overthrow ($45): 1/10. This yoyo is just.. bad. The response is always a mystery, I've thrown two of these and one of them kept snagging and the other one was super slippy. They also vibe like crazy. The real dinger for me though is that this is a bad recycle attempt on nine-dragons shells, as they both use the same plastic part. You can easily overtighten these and strip them, and if you hit it once on anything (even carpet) it'll get nasty pulse vibe. Stay away.

Exotic Throws Salamander ($120): 3/10. Let me preface, this throw is not terrible, but the pricepoint is. The Salamander is a 7075 monometal yoyo, and frankly, is not worth $120. You can see tool lines on it from the machining process, and the finish causes it to just feel scratchy and unpleasant. For a yoyo to be a $120 monometal it better be QC'd into oblivion or have the most unique design, but this is neither. Mine shipped with nail vibe and the design is fairly conservative. It plays okay, but by why spend the extra $80-90?
