2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP Gets the Nurburgring Shakedown

The hottest Mini has been put through its paces at the world’s most notorious racetrack, the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Undergoing a shakedown ahead of its entry to production, the 2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP made an appearance in prototype form during the weekend of the famed 24-hour race at the track.

Mini says that the prototype broke the eight-minute mark during testing, making it faster than the previous JCW GP, which lapped the Nürburgring in 8:23. Twitter user Will Pierce, however, broke the news regarding the car’s official time before Mini did after taking a shot of the dash with the car’s 7:56.6 lap time embedded in it. For reference, that time is still slower than the Honda Civic Type R, which was 7:43.8, and the current record holder, the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, which completed The Green Hell in 7:40.1.

Under the hood of the 2020 Mini JCW GP is a 2.0-liter turbo-four that is said to produce over 300 hp. Transmission choices haven’t been announced but it’s likely that an eight-speed automatic will be the only one available just like in the refreshed JCW iterations of the Clubman and Countryman. Unlike its larger siblings, the 2020 Mini JCW GP is likely going to be front-wheel drive only. In the spirit of its predecessors, the 2020 Mini JCW GP looks outrageous with its massive roof-mounted spoiler, funky-looking flared wheel arches, and two oversized exhaust tips. The car appears to have larger air intakes in the lower front fascia, and the hood scoop appears to be a functional one. A front splitter appears to have been added along with extended side sills, and a lowered suspension.

When it goes on sale next year, the 2020 Mini JCW GP will be limited to 3,000 units globally. The previous JCW GP, which debuted for the 2013 model year, was limited to 2,000 examples worldwide, and only 500 made it to the United States.
