Recent Forza titles have been criticized often for their progression being all over the place, and I agree they're pretty bad so far. Having played FH3, FM7 and FH4 they've all felt very unrewarding to progress so I never bothered to go more than half way into the game. That's not to say I don't play these games often, I just don't play the single player campaign very much at all. I have about 400 hours in Horizon 3, but I don't even have all festivals upgraded to level 5.

So I wondered why I find these games so boring to progress. I'm usually a fan of repetitive or long games such as Tokyo Xtreme Racer but for some reason Forza doesn't have any of that appeal. This is because personally, there is 0 reason for me to keep playing the single player, as there is nothing that I care about that I couldn't get by doing something else.

In older games, you didn't really have a choice to progress. Keep playing or you don't get the good stuff. In Forza, not only does the game hands you all the good stuff like candy, you're also not really guaranteed to get good stuff by playing single player.

This is where wheelspins become a problem. Wheelspins IMO remove any sort of incentive to play the career mode because they give you very good stuff depending on your luck, and they give you plenty of them. In both H3 and H4, within the first few hours of starting the game I've already had several exotic supercars from wheelspins. I can keep playing the normal game to get absolutely nothing but an increase to my events completed tally and a tiny amount of credits, or I can take my supercar to a circuit and do 10 laps of it for money and spins.

When I bought FH1 to try it, I vastly preferred the progression in that game. There are very few lucky draws in the single player, and all the cars you had you either bought or won certain ones from certain events. Building up your garage felt more satisfying as you had to win or buy every car in it, instead of having over half of them handed to you for no reason.

TLDR: FH1 is the best, wheelspins ruin the game.
