Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid Coming in 2020

Around the same time that Jeep brings out a plug-in hybrid Wrangler, it will also offer an electrified Renegade. The Jeep Renegade PHEV will enter production at Fiat Chrysler’s Melfi plant in Italy.

FCA will build the first pre-production copies next year before the final version hits the market in early 2020. The Melfi plant, which currently builds the Renegade and Fiat 500X, will undergo modernization efforts to keep pace with the new plug-in.

We anticipate the plug-in Renegade will arrive here in the U.S. at some point. When FCA announced its five-year product plan a few months ago, we learned that Jeep vehicles built around a front-wheel-drive architecture, such as the Renegade and Cherokee, will offer a rear-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels. Jeep aims to have eight PHEV models on sale in the U.S. by 2022. The plug-in Wrangler is expected to arrive in 2020.

The new Jeeps will join FCA’s growing-but-small lineup of electrified vehicles. Introduced for the 2017 model year, the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in began the rollout, followed by the mild hybrid Ram 1500 that arrived for the 2019 model year. By 2022, FCA will offer 30 different models with electrified powertrains. By that time, 12 electric propulsion systems will be available across different global architectures.
