lamboblogging

Rumors are intensifying that the next generation Corvette is coming soon, and that it will be much different than anything that came before it. They say it will be mid-engined. I guess they want it to better compete against the Porsches and Ferraris and Lamborghinis. However this I feel will be a mistake. First off I fear it will come with a rise in price, it will still cost a lot less than its European competitors, but the increase if big enough could reduce sales. This is kind of what killed the Dodge Viper, their refusal to make it a more mainstream Supercar like the Corvette is currently. Second I think the Corvette is a beautiful car, in my eyes a front-engined car if designed right could have much better looks than any car with the engine in the back could ever hope for, I don’t think Corvette breaking with almost 70 years of tradition would be a positive thing. And third, this is something that bugs me a lot. Why do the people at GM feel they should compete more directly with Ferrari or Porsche? They offer a car with similar performance, more comfort, a much lower price tag and ten times higher sales than all its class competitors combined. A truly American and pragmatic interpretation of what a Supercar should be. If this new car will be an ultra-premium version meant to compete with high end models like La Ferrari then by all means do it, while leaving the traditional Corvette for the rest of us. But if they make it a copy of the 488, I fear it will lose its soul, and it will be self-inflicted, sales are good, they’re winning races left and right, nothing is forcing them to do this drastic makeover. That’s why I hope that GM will keep offering us a car that demonstrates to us every day what originally made the name Corvette great.
