The Cadillac XT4 is reportedly going to be built at General Motors’ Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. Sources told Bloomberg that Cadillac has begun manufacturing prototypes from the Fairfax facility but the company hasn’t announced plans for production.
When it arrives, the Cadillac XT4 will serve two purposes: getting more luxury buyers into Cadillac showrooms and making better use of the Fairfax plant. Currently, Cadillac only has the XT5 and the massive Escalade to offer, and the lack of SUVs in its lineup has caused the brand to struggle in terms of sales in the U.S. despite its success in markets like China.
In an email, Cadillac president Johann de Nysschen told Bloomberg that the Cadillac XT4 will be a new platform for the brand. De Nysschen continued by stating that he believed the XT4 is the right size and has the dynamics and sophistication of a Cadillac. Underpinning the Cadillac XT4 will likely be the same platform used in the Chevrolet Malibu, which is built at GM’s Fairfax plant in Kansas City, to help minimize costs. Last year, third shifts at the Fairfax plant were cut due to Malibu sales dropping by 18 percent. In a bid to keep passenger cars profitable, automakers are now planning to build them alongside crossovers, which are more profitable.
Cadillac is expected to reveal the XT4 sometime this year, with the new model slotting below the larger XT5 and giving the brand a competitor to the likes of the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
