Every auto show needs a list of high-dollar reveals, whether its large and luxurious sedans, very fast sports cars, or vehicles that can do both. The 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show had some jaw-dropping debuts including the hyper-expensive AMG hypercar and the most powerful production Corvette ever. Even though many of us can’t afford $100,000+ vehicles, we can appreciate their looks, performance, and features for when we imagine driving them.
2019 Corvette ZR-1 Convertible
The most powerful production Corvette goes topless for the L.A. Auto Show. Chevrolet revealed the 2019 Corvette ZR1 convertible along with the North American debut of the ZR1 coupe. Under the hood is the familiar 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 but tuned to produce a whopping 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque. That’s 101 hp more than the Z06 and 117 hp more than the last (C6) ZR1. Chevrolet claims a top speed of 210 mph, making it the fastest production Corvette ever. With a curb weight of only 3,560 pounds (60 more for the convertible), it’s safe to say that the ZR1 will be an outrageous sports car. Although, what everyone is really waiting for is the upcoming mid-engine Corvette. The coupe starts at $119,995 and the convertible at $123,995.
2019 BMW i8 Roadster
One of the coolest-looking plug-ins on the market just became even better with the addition of a roadster model. The BMW i9 Roadster made its debut at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show along with the updated i8 coupe. The Roadster’s soft top can open in less than 16 seconds and operates at speeds up to 31 mph. Unlike the 2+2 seating configuration in the coupe, the Roadster is only a two-seater. A new battery pack with an increased capacity of 11.6 kWh is now equipped offering an additional 12 hp and 18 miles of all-electric driving range (up from 15 miles). The 1.5-liter turbocharged I-3 engine still produces 228-hp and 236 lb-ft, and combined power output is now at 369 hp and 420 lb-ft. BMW claims the Roadster can hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and the coupe can hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The coupe has a starting price of $146,395, and BMW tells us that the Roadster will be north of $150,000.
2018 BMW M5
BMW’s full-size sport sedan is back and more powerful than ever and with all-wheel-drive. The automaker’s xDrive AWD system routes 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, produced from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. However, an enthusiast-preferred two-wheel-drive mode is possible on this particular xDrive system. BMW claims the new M5 is the quickest M-vehicle ever and can hit 60 mph in a blazing 3.2 seconds (thank you, AWD) and reach the quarter mile in just 11.1 seconds. With the M Driver’s package, the M5 can reach a top speed of 189 mph. To help put all that power down properly, BMW revised the M5’s double-A-arm front suspension and five-link rear suspension, widened the track, thickened the anti-roll bars, and added a new steel X-brace. The optional Variable Damper Control system features electronically controlled shocks with three modes. BMW announced the starting price of $103,595 at the L.A. Auto Show.
AMG Project One
There are a few hypercars out in today’s market but none like the Mercedes-AMG Project One, an F1-derived hypercar. For starters, the hybrid powertrain consists of turbocharged V-6 with a very small displacement of just 1.6 liters—a similar unit used in the F1 race cars—and shares the same block and heads. Unlike the F1 version that revs to 13,500 rpm, the Project One’s engine still revs to a sky-high 11,000 rpm. A small electric motor mounted on the shaft of the turbocharged keeps the turbo spinning at all times for instant throttle response. A second motor mounted on the engine’s crankshaft delivers an additional 161 hp when extra power is needed. Two additional 161-hp electric motors are connected to the front wheels for a combined total system output of about 1,000 hp. According to AMG, the Project One will have a top speed greater than 217 mph and can hit 124 mph in less than 6 seconds, faster than the Bugatti Chiron. Expect a starting price of about $2.7 million for this exclusive hypercar.
2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo
Making its North American debut, the 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo might be a mouthful, but with a Porsche-claimed 0-60-mph time of 3.2 seconds, who cares? The Panamera is capable of that because of its hybrid powertrain consisting of a 550-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and a 136-hp electric motor that pumps out an impressive 680 hp and 626 lb-ft—this is not your ordinary wagon. The engine is backed by an eight-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic, and the automaker claims a top speed of 192 mph. After romping around town, lower your carbon footprint with the Panamera’s all-electric driving range of about 31 miles, thanks to the 14.1-kWh battery. This 5,093-pound German wagon’s braking system consists of massive 10-piston calipers clamping down on huge 16.5-inch carbon-ceramic rotors in the front and four-piston calipers with 16.1-inch rotors in the rear. It does all of that while sitting in the lap of luxury comes at a price—the Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo starts at $189,450.
2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T
Yes, another 911 model, but the Carrera T is the lightest. It weighs only 3,142 pounds and produces 370 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine. Thankfully, the T (stands for Touring) can come equipped with either a seven-speed manual transmission (0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds) or a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic (0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds). But top speed for the manual transmission is a pinch higher at 182 mph in comparison to the automatic’s top speed of 180 mph. The 911 T features 20-inch wheels, a standard sport exhaust system with black tips, and a front spoiler. Prices start at $103,150.
2018 Range Rover SVAutobiography
After refreshing the Range Rover, Land Rover updated the range-topping and long-wheelbase SVAutobiography model. The 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 now churns out 557-hp and 516 lb-ft that rockets the large and heavy SUV to 60 mph in a Land Rover-claimed 5.2 seconds. The best seat in the house is located in the back, thanks to the Executive Class Rear Seats package that offers 46.8 inches of legroom, 22-way power adjustability with a hot stone massage function, 40-degree recline capability, and heated calf and footrests. Additionally, a refrigerator compartment is housed in the very large center console that extends from the front to the rear seats and so is a control hub that operates many features including the power close rear doors and the power-deployable seat tables. Also new is a seat design upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather, two new veneers, and five revised interior color schemes. A unique grille design with chrome inserts and a new 22-inch wheel design are exclusive to the SVAutobiography. Prices start at a hefty $208, 895.
2018 Saleen 1
Saleen is back and built an all-new sports car from the ground up. It plans to sell the model in the U.S., Europe, and China. Designed by the company founder Steve Saleen, the Saleen 1–or S1 for short–has carbon-fiber bodywork is mounted on an aluminum chassis for a curb weight of only 2,685 pounds. The mid-engine sports car comes equipped with an in-house-developed turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 engine that churns out an impressive 450 hp and 350 lb-ft and is backed by a six-speed manual transmission—a dual-clutch option with be offered later. A claimed top speed of 180 mph with a quarter-mile time of 11.3 seconds is impressive, so is the 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and 1.2 g cornering grip. The sticky Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires help make this happen. The two-seater has a starting price of $100,000, and customers can already leave a $1,000 deposit if they’d like to order one.
