Lamborghini Teases What Might Be its First Hybrid Supercar

A few days ago, we reported that Lamborghini has plans to make the Huracan’s successor a hybrid just like the upcoming hybrid Urus SUV. At the time, Lamborghini head Stefano Domenicali also said it won’t be fully electric, and that the Italian supercar company is still dedicated to offering large V-10 and V-12 engines. Today, Lamborghini released this teaser, which is most likely a concept version of the hybrid supercar that’s coming in 2022.

Lamborghini began working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last year, so it’s only fitting that the car will be revealed at the MIT Technology Review’s EmTech conference on November 6. Unfortunately, we know next to nothing about this car, and the teaser doesn’t offer many details. The shape still appears to be typical Lamborghini, but the three-pointed running lights are a new touch. One thing we can see, however, is the relatively large air intake arrangement up front that suggests the presence of at least some kind of internal combustion engine. Then again, maybe Lamborghini needs all that air to help cool the batteries.

Since the other day wasn’t the first time Lamborghini said it has no plans for an all-electric car yet, we’re leaning toward a hybrid. But about a year ago, a rumor did surface that said a fully electric hypercar was in the works. Supposedly, it will be called the Vitola and will be built on the Mission E’s platform. It will also reportedly be able to hit 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds. Since that initial report back in 2016, though, we haven’t heard anything else about this supposed all-electric Lamborghini hypercar, so who knows how much truth there was to that rumor.

Back in 2014, Lamborghini did show off a hybrid supercar concept called the Asterion. It made a combined 897 hp, could hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, and had a top speed of 199 mph. Based on what we can see in the teaser above, it’s probably not the same car, but don’t be surprised if Lamborghini takes a similar approach to the new car’s powertrain.
