Hyundai Ioniq for SEMA Nets More Than 80 MPG

Automakers typically use SEMA as an opportunity to show off performance modifications, not boast about fuel economy. But Hyundai has taken a different approach with the “HyperEconiq Ioniq” created in collaboration with Bisimoto Engineering.

The SEMA-bound concept features a Bisimoto Dream Aero kit with a special front splitter, TA wing, side splitters, and rear wheel covers. Along with a Bisimoto pulse-chamber exhaust system, the model also gets enhanced e-generators, optimized inertial supercharging during valvetrain overlap, and a Progress Performance coilover suspension that reduces ground clearance. Also look for low-rolling resistance tires on Carbon Revolution 19-inch carbon fiber wheels, Buddy Club aluminum brake calipers, and NGK spark plugs. Inside the cabin, there are Recaro Pole Position racing seats.

“The HyperEconiq Ioniq takes the Ioniq where we always knew it could go, without sacrificing drivability,” said Bisi Ezerioha, president of Bisimoto Engineering, in a statement. “Leveraging the outstanding Ioniq electrified platform and powertrain, we’ve focused on a variety of technical elements to bring efficiency, aero and design to the highest level.”

Thanks to the updates, the special Ioniq delivers a combined fuel economy of “well over 80 mpg,” Hyundai asserts. For comparison, the regular 2017 Hyundai Ioniq tops out at 58 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

Hyundai will introduce three versions of the Ioniq: a traditional hybrid, EV, and plug-in hybrid. All versions came out earlier this year except the plug-in, which launches this fall.

The 2017 SEMA Show runs from October 31-November 3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
