Plug-in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport Coming

Land Rover will add plug-in hybrid versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport by the end of the 2017 fiscal year in March. The expansion of the lineup was announced by Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth at the Frankfurt auto show

Land Rover offers a Range Rover hybrid, but it has a diesel engine. The planned hybrids would pair an electric motor with the automaker’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ingenium engine. The SUVs could be capable of about 30 miles of pure EV range.

Executives say more details will be revealed in October. The vehicles will be global and the U.S. will get the plug-ins by next March.

JLR also used the Frankfurt show to reveal the Land Rover Discovery SVX with a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 and more ground clearance than the already capable regular Discovery. A winch will be standard and initial torque will be impressive, officials say. The SUV will keep the eight-speed automatic transmission.

It is the first time Discovery wears the SVX badge and it goes into production in 2018. It will be handmade by the automaker’s Special Vehicle Operations division.

Jaguar also showed the I-Pace, and executives say there are already 25,000 hand-raisers.
