Nissan’s midsize pickup received its last overhaul for the 2005 model year, so it’s about time the automaker announce plans for a brand new model. Finally, Nissan has confirmed the Frontier will live on.
Nissan will continue producing the Frontier in Canton, Mississippi, as the truck moves into a new generation. The plant currently builds the Frontier as well as the Murano, Titan, Titan XD, NV Cargo, and NV Passenger vehicles.
The Frontier competes against much newer offerings including the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and Honda Ridgeline. Through August 2017, Frontier sales were down 18.9 percent from the same time period last year. Nissan sold 50,097 Frontiers in the first eight months of the year, compared to 71,763 sales for the Colorado and 129,362 for the Tacoma. GMC only moved 20,347 Canyons and Honda only sold 23,792 Ridgelines.
Back in 2014, we criticized the 2012 Frontier’s aging interior, which looks even older now. But we also praised the truck for its carlike steering, its competent PRO-4X suspension package, and easy-to-shift six-speed automatic.
Nissan hasn’t said when we can expect the new Frontier to arrive in the U.S. It’s possible the next-generation model will share its bones with the current Nissan Navara sold overseas.
