Volkswagen Atlas

All-New: Volkswagen enters the three-row crossover segment, at last. The Atlas seats six or seven depending on trim and is offered with a 235-hp turbo-four or 276-hp V-6 and in FWD or AWD. The 60/40-split second-row seats can slide 7.7 inches back and forth and can be reclined 14 degrees beyond the most upright position. The Atlas has slightly more passenger volume than the Pilot.

Major: Volkswagen might finally have a competitive compact crossover with the new Tiguan. Actually, the U.S.-spec model isn’t very compact, with its 185.2-inch length nearly 2 and 5 inches longer than the 2017 Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, respectively. Like the Nissan Rogue, the Tiguan will offer a third row. The Tiguan’s power comes from a 184-hp, 221-lb-ft turbo-four.

Discontinued: With the Atlas in dealerships, the Touareg has been discontinued. The five-passenger Touareg made its U.S. debut for the 2004 model year and was our 2004 SUV of the Year, but buyers might have balked at the luxury price of a VW SUV built on the same platform as the old Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. The current generation previously offered a hybrid and diesel, but the 2017 model has a gas V-6.
