Watch a Jeep YJ Chassis Marry a ’61 Willys Body on Dirt Every Day

In this installment of Dirt Every Day, Fred Williams and Dave Chappelle meet to construct the ultimate ’61 Willys Jeep Wagon. As Williams explains, he picked the Willys from a barn and swapped a new engine in it but didn’t update the chassis or driveline. The host’s plan is to take the Willys body and swap it onto a more modern 1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ’s frame.

To do this, the duo must first separate the body from the frame of each vehicle. Williams discovers an unfortunate surprise on the wrecked YJ, a bent frame. Fixing this issue requires Chappelle’s fabrication expertise. After the fix, the team extends the YJ’s chassis by 10 inches to fit the Willys body.

It may seem odd that the two hosts would pull the V-8 powertrain out of the Willys Wagon in favor of the YJ’s 4.0 Liter I-6, but the YJ chassis is more modern and better equipped for off-road shenanigans. The YJ’s brakes, transmission, and drivetrain are in far better condition than the ’61 Willys Wagon, hence the decision to perform the swap. The classic look of the Willys remains, and now its internals are ready for four-wheelin’ action.

The duo had lots of fun restoring this Jeep to its former glory with new axles and upgraded wheels and tires from Tire Rack. Watch the video below to fully appreciate the Willys Wagon’s journey from derelict to roadworthy.
