Tesla Model S Drivers Travel 670 Miles on a Single Charge

The Tesla Model S can travel up to 335 miles on a single charge, according to EPA estimates, but a group of enthused hypermilers managed to squeeze out double that amount in a record-setting drive. Five members of the Tesla Owners Italia club recently drove 670 miles in a Model S without stopping to recharge.

To achieve the record, the team drove without air conditioning at an average speed of 25 mph. The Model S was also equipped with low rolling-resistance tires to further improve efficiency. By the end of 670 miles, there was no remaining charge left, but they say they ended up beating a previous record set in Belgium by a whopping 110 miles.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk congratulated the team on Twitter.

One of the five drivers, Rosario Pingaro, said the car’s semi-autonomous driving technology allowed the Model S to keep a constant speed in the middle of the lane. Luca Del Bo, the club’s president, attributed the success to the ability of the car to transform 95 percent of the energy into motion. “Just consider that the most efficient combustion engines today do not exceed 30 percent efficiency,” he pointed out.

The record was set in a 100D, which offers the longest range of any Model S. This version can actually reach 514 miles on a single charge if the driver travels at 45 mph, according to a range calculator on Tesla’s website.

Meanwhile, the P100D takes the cake when it comes to acceleration. Though it’s only rated by the EPA to travel 315 miles on a single charge, a P100D hit 60 mph in 2.3 seconds in our tests.
