Maven Gig, GM’s attempt to break into the gig economy by offering Chevrolet Bolt EV rentals to drivers for hire, landed in Los Angeles this week. The service began in San Diego and San Francisco, and now GM plans on expanding it to other major cities like Boston, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Detroit by fall 2017.
Maven Gig is a car-sharing system that allows its users to borrow a car for ridesharing and delivery services. If you are working for HopSkipDrive, GrubHub, Instacart, Roadie, or are a freelance driver for ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft, you no longer have to own your own vehicle.
After paying an initial membership fee, Maven Gig users can rent a Chevrolet Bolt to make money delivering goods or picking up fares. The Maven Gig user saves the hassle of owning a car (washing, repairs, upkeep, etc) while making money using one.
Maven City car sharing and Maven Gig are now combined on a single app. Drivers can see what cars are available as well as their pricing and location. Reserving cars and arranging pickup times is done through the app.
The all-electric 2017 Bolt EV has an EPA-Estimated 238-mile range. So far, Maven Gig Bolt EVs have covered 1.4 million miles in California since February of 2017 and have saved about 50,000 gallons of gas, according to the company. Currently, there are 100 Bolt EVs available in Los Angeles and GM plans on doubling that number by the end of 2017.
