The IIHS has awarded the 2018 Kia Sorento a Top Safety Pick+ designation thanks to improvements to its headlights. Last year’s model only received the Top Safety Pick award because its headlights scored a Poor rating on the new headlights test (Good is the highest score possible). The 2018 Sorento’s headlights have since improved to Acceptable; however, that’s limited only to the SX V-6 trim with the Advanced Technology package and the range-topping SXL grade made after May 2017, which feature HID low-beam headlights that steer into corners.
Like the 2017 model, the 2018 Sorento received a Good score on all crash tests, roof strength test, and the head restraints test. Additionally, the 2018 Sorento also gets the highest score of Superior on the front crash prevention test after it avoided a 12- and 25-mph collision. Active safety and driver assist features are available on the EX and SX trims as part of the Advanced Touring package or as standard in the SXL trim. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist.
In order for a car to earn the Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, it must score Good on all crash tests, roof strength, and head restraints tests, get a Superior or Advanced rating in the front crash prevention test, and receive a Good or Acceptable score on the headlights test.
