Meet the 2020 BMW Alpina B3, a 456-HP M3 Alternative You Can’t Have

In celebration of 40 years in Japan, Alpina has pulled the wraps off its 3 Series AWD model, which will be available here in sedan and Touring wagon forms. Pricing will start at the equivalent of $113,000-$119,350 for the sedan and wagon including local taxes (for reference, an M340i xDrive wagon starts at $92,473 in Japan).

As usual, the wizards of Buchloe, Bavaria serve as a performance foil to the mothership’s M division, offering up grander touring in comfort with an emphasis on effortless low-end torque over hair-on-fire horsepower. Alpina fits its own twin turbochargers to BMW’s iconic 3.0-liter straight six, along with custom intake and exhaust plumbing, engine control software, cooling upgrades, and more. The result is 456 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. That’s up from 382 hp/369 lb-ft in the base M340i and 444 hp/406 lb-ft on the M3 Competition. Power is routed to all four wheels through a traditional eight-speed automatic and an electronically controlled helical-type limited-slip rear differential. Alpina pegs 0-62-mph acceleration in 3.8 seconds en route to a top speed of 188 mph.

Chassis modifications include unique Alpina Variable Damper Control and variable sport steering assist, plus Pirelli P Zero tires on a choice of 18- or 20-inch lightweight forged Alpina turbine-style wheels (sadly these do not include a hollow spoke leading to a concealed valve stem under the center cap as many Alpina wheels in the past have).

Other exterior aero and styling enhancements on the new Alpina B3 include a front splitter, rear diffuser, stainless exhaust tips, and optional side stripes. Inside there’s buttery-soft Alpina-logo-embroidered leather upholstery and a fully digital instrument cluster with custom Alpina graphics. Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2020 with customer deliveries following in the autumn. Japan gets a wider range of Alpina cars, including the XD3 and XD4 diesel SUVs, diesel D3 and D4 sedan and coupe, D5 diesel and B5 S gasoline sedans as well as the B7 (the only Alpina offered in the U.S., for now). Sadly the B3 models are not expected to be offered in North America. Alpina’s global production is forecast at just 1,600 cars for the year, ensuring exclusivity.

Ram 1500 Rebel OTG Concept for SEMA Is an Epic Overland Rig

What is an overland expedition? Can “overlanding” be a proper verb form? “Unlike traditional ‘four-wheeling,’ in overlanding the journey is the final objective,” Joe Dehner says in answer to both questions. The chief of Ram truck and Mopar design adds, “The goal is to explore rather than conquer obstacles.”

The Ram 1500 Rebel OTG concept is a sort of mashup of Mopar and REI catalogs, paying homage to the special brand of off-roading pioneered in Australia. The OTG—for “off the grid”—is a Rebel-spec truck powered by a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 that drinks from a 33-gallon tank for long-distance travel. A high-end Dometic refrigerator/freezer in the bed is powered by rooftop solar panels via a separate 12-volt battery, and there’s also a Dometic gas stove and sink in the OTG’s bed that can be pulled out past the 60/40-split tailgate.

The Ram pickup itself gets a Mopar concept two-inch lift kit, 35-inch Goodyear tires on beadlock wheels, a concept front bumper with integrated winch, a larger grille with flow-through R-A-M badging, and a functional snorkel air intake. There are front and rear wheel flares and step-assist rock rails for rough terrain, as well as a concept rear bumper adapted from that of the Ram 1500 Tradesman, which relocates the exhaust for a better departure angle. Off-road driving lights and supplemental backup lamps are lit via LEDs, and there’s task lighting attached to the rear rack system for camping at night.

A bed rack system with traction mats and a high-lift jack is mounted on top of the truck bed and carries a collapsible rooftop tent with stowable ladder. The truck has a rock-rail assist, the Ram Tradesman’s molded-vinyl floor in place of the factory carpeting, a Yakima roof rack and basket, special graphics (note the hood, and a concept air intake with airbox.

Moparized Jeep Wrangler Gets Tube-Door Skins and Mirrors for SEMA

We can’t speak for other cities in the U.S., but last summer in Detroit, it was de rigueur to cruise Woodward Avenue in a JL Jeep Wrangler with the tube doors on in place of the original equipment steel doors. Now, one of the mildest Mopar customs produced for the 2019 SEMA show addresses the question of what to do if you find those tubular doors a bit too, uh, tubular.

Most of this “Moparized” Jeep Wrangler Unlimited’s parts and accessories are already available off the shelf, however, including the two-inch lift kit, beadlock wheels with 35-inch (outer diameter) mud terrain tires, and 5.0-inch LED off-road lights at the base of the A-pillar and 7.0-inch LED lights in the grille. The tailgate table, Katzkin seats, and snorkel with cold-air intake are all from the Mopar catalog, as well. Jeep says this kit would cost around $15,000 to add to your own Wrangler.

Mopar calls the water-resistant synthetic mesh covers for the tube doors (which quizzically aren’t shown in Jeep’s handout photos) and accessory sideview mirrors “conceptual,” although we’d bet new catalogs already are printed up with them inside. The new sideview mirrors—remember, the factory mirrors go away when the stock doors are removed—easily bolt into the tube doors, and the mesh covers zip up around them. This Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is one of 14 vehicles that Fiat Chrysler’s Mopar aftermarket parts division created for the 2019 SEMA Show, which runs from November 5 to 8 in Las Vegas.
