2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coming to Detroit Auto Show

Ford has teased the engine that will power the 2020 Mustang GT500, its most powerful production car ever. The automaker also revealed the model will debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

The teaser image shows the supercharged V-8 engine that will make more than 700 hp. A plaque on the supercharger housing mentions the date January 14, 2019, which is the first media day of the Detroit auto show. Just below that date, Ford references its Romeo engine plant in Michigan where the powerplant will be built. If this teaser looks familiar, it’s probably because the GT500’s engine bay leaked online almost a year ago. The casting looks more refined here and the cobra logo is cleaner, but the overall design appears to be unchanged from that earlier prototype.

The GT500 reveal won’t be a total surprise, given that photos of the car have already leaked on Instagram. But we’re curious to know what that engine has in store. We think it’s likely a supercharged version of the GT350’s 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V-8. Exact output and transmission choices remain unknown at this point.

Right now, Ford is not selling a GT500, making due with the still-potent GT350 and GT350R. When it was discontinued after the 2014 model year, the GT500 was making 662 hp from a 5.8-liter supercharged V-8. The coupe ran to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds during MotorTrend tests, so we’re excited to see how quick the new, more powerful version will be.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will go on sale in the fall of 2019.

Helldeer Redeye: Santa Claus’ Sleigh Gets an Upgrade

One underreported consequence of Earth’s exploding population (7.5 billion and counting) is the stress this puts on Santa Claus in terms of making his rounds to deliver toys to all the good little girls and boys in a single night. Well, it finally occurred to the nice folks at Dodge/SRT that upgrading the quality of Mr. Claus’ powertrain from “tiny reindeer” to “mighty horses” while simultaneously increasing the quantity from 8 to 797 could really help speed up the toy distribution process. That’s right, this is no mere 707-horse Helldeer, it’s a Helldeer Redeye, as the revised, antlered badging attests.

One elfin trade secret not divulged in the press materials at the sleigh’s gala L.A. show launch is just exactly how that abundant power is translated into motion, seeing as the 275/40ZR20 P Zeros have all been replaced by sleigh runners. After careful examination, your humble technical director deduces that forward motion occurs via exhaust thrust out the rear-fascia-mounted tailpipes, while steering is accomplished by redirecting the abundant exhaust flow to either of the four side-thruster outlets positioned where the front wheels live on terrestrial Challengers. Retardation is then entirely left to the friction of the atmosphere and rooftop snow.

The biggest apparent downside we’d like to prepare Santa for is one familiar to most adopters of muscle cars—it’s way tighter on toy-space in the back than the reindeer-powered sleigh Claus has become accustomed to. So this Christmas we’ll be eager to learn whether the improved speed enabled by the 99-fold-plus increase in power can offset the need for more frequent returns to the North Pole distribution center to refill the open trunk. Check back on Boxing Day for a full report.

2018 L.A. Auto Show: The 2020 V60 Cross Country is the Adventurous Volvo

Who’s going to buy the 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country? Adventurous outdoor types, says Volvo. Counterintuitive as it may seem, Volvo’s jacked-up Cross Country wagons are popular with those who like to head off the beaten path in search of adventure. Volvo SUVs? As far as Cross Country aficionados are concerned, they’re strictly suburban warriors, meant for schlepping the kids to hockey practice or mooching down to the local mall.

The 2020 V60 Cross Country is essentially an AWD Volvo V60 with Fjallraven flair. The suspension has been revised to increase ground clearance by three inches, and the sills and fenders trimmed in scratch resistant black plastic. In addition to AWD the V60 Cross Country comes standard with hill descent control and an off-road mode programmed into the powertrain control system.

As sales numbers will be relatively small, Volvo Cars USA has limited the number of options available beyond the usual choice of color, interior trim, and wheels. For example, the turbo-only 250-hp, 258-lb/ft T5 variant of Volvo’s versatile 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be the only powertrain offered when the car goes on sale in the U.S. mid-summer 2019. Pricing has yet to be announced, but is expected to start at about $40,000.

The Nissan Leaf Race Car is Back and Twice as Powerful

Back in 2011, Nissan decided to turn the Leaf into a race car, and the result was the original Leaf Nismo RC. Now there’s a new version that Nissan claims is more than twice as powerful as before.

Revealed in Tokyo this week, the new Leaf Nismo RC uses two electric motors to power all four wheels. The body has also been restyled for better aerodynamic performance. Its roofline is now nearly a foot lower than a regular Leaf. And, of course, there’s the massive wing out back to provide the necessary downforce.

The two 161-hp motors combine to make a system total of 322 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. With a carbon fiber body and other lightweight components, Nissan was able to keep the weight down to about 2,690 pounds. That allows the Leaf Nismo RC to launch from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds, making it 50 percent quicker than its predecessor. To get around the track more quickly, power at each axle is controlled independently, sending torque to the wheels based on which one has the most grip.

As before, the new Leaf Nismo RC is more than a one-off concept that will never see a race track. Nissan says it plans to build six examples that it will send to various events around the world.
